New UK Radiography Special Interest Group. Association of Radiography Educators.
Following an initial article in Synergy a small working group has been formed with the aim of setting up a special interest group for radiographers (both diagnostic and therapy) who have an interest in education. The special interest group has been given the name: ‘The Association of Radiography Educators’ and the tagline: ‘Promoting excellence in radiography through education’.
The Association of Radiography Educators aims to represent radiographers involved in, or interested in, radiography education. This can be the education of undergraduate radiographers, assistant practitioners or of qualified staff, in the clinical or academic setting.
The association aims to promote best practice in both clinical and academic education by:
Supporting and promoting a radiography-specific educational research base; Raising the profile of practice-based education; Supporting and facilitating CPD; Holding an annual conference; Facilitating local training events; Developing networks; Liaising with other special interest groups.
Our website can be found at www.are-uk.org and we intend this website to be central to the activities of this group. Through the website, members of the association will be able to network with other radiographers who have similar interests. Furthermore, as the association develops, it will host a variety of educational resources. We hope the website will be interactive with members providing materials for use by others. This interactive nature will provide CPD opportunities as the education of others is a form of self-development. In other words, those providing educational materials will be undertaking CPD in addition to those individuals who download and use the materials.
We are now open for membership which will be available at a reduced rate for the first 12 months. The reduced rate is in recognition of the fact that this group is still very much in development. In a way, this makes it an exciting time to join as we are still very much open to ideas and input! Membership is available on an individual and departmental basis.
CPD Management System CPDConference.org with Kosmos Software Limited have developed and published a new CPD tool for organisations.
CPD Window is an online Diary and CPD Portfolio system that provides an easy-to-use method of planning, recording and evidencing professional development activities to an organisation or professional body with e-learning and assessment capabilities.

BMUS launches new look website. BMUS LAUNCHES NEW LOOK WEBSITE
The British Medical Ultrasound Society is pleased to announce the launch of their new look website and Internet resources. Both the public information and ‘members’ only’ areas at www.BMUS.org have been dramatically redeveloped, and the site now boasts numerous new features and information pages.
The BMUS website has always been a valuable resource for professionals; with pages providing historical information, guidance on ultrasound safety, job listings, presentations and case studies. BMUS are grateful for all the hard work that went into the original site that has been maintained by Dr. Gareth Thorne and a team of volunteers from the Society over many years. Since the appointment of Ann Tailor as General Secretary of the Society in January, BMUS have been making renewed steps to raise the profile of the Society, and professional practice and standards within the field of international medical ultrasound. The BMUS website was seen as a primary communication tool and therefore a priority for investment and renewal.
Kosmos Software Limited, producers of the Sonographers’ online forum - www.SonographersUK.net, were invited by BMUS to consult on their website strategy and were awarded the contract to redesign the site at the end of March this year. Neil Spence, Project Manager from Kosmos has worked closely with BMUS and its officers ensuring the needs of the Society and its members were fulfilled and a professional style and easy-to-use format has been created. Mr Spence will also be working with BMUS on possible future projects, like their conference presentation archive and video training material created by the BMUS academic experts.
Members of the public, and current or future members of BMUS are invited to visit the website to start benefiting from the resources that the Society have provided. Any questions, suggestions or requests for additional website information should be addressed to BMUS’s newly appointed Website Manager, Alice Hepworth from the Society’s office team.

The UK Sonographers Forum launches at BMUS. At the start of December CPDConference.org was approached to develop an independent online discussion forum for UK Sonographers.
www.SonographersUK.net is now online and ready to use. CPD Conference manager, Neil Spence, attended the British Medical Ultrasound Society meeting this week in Manchester and was on-hand to help demonstrate and promote the forum.
It is a free facility, which requires no membership to any of the Societies related to Ultrasound practitioners. This new forum will hopefully compliment the work of other Sonography related organisations and ease communication between professionals across the UK and beyond. New forum topics can be easily added. Subjects ranging from the Agenda for Change to asking for assistance in setting up a new service or advertising a study day can be made available to everybody to view and contribute to.
Thanks go to Philips Medical Systems - Ultrasound who have sponsored the initial costs of developing and marketing this website but they have no control over the content or use of the forum. Please help us by contributing to the forum and let's turn this idea into a really useful resource.

Voting in Favour of UK's AFC The UK Department of Health website reports, Health Secretary John Reid today welcomed the decision by the both UNISON and Amicus members to vote in favour of the Agenda for Change AfC reforms. The new pay packages were endorsed earlier in the year by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), the Royal College of Midwives, GMB and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists. The members of the Society of Radiographers voted against the reforms and protested strongly against the changes to working hours and pay structure.
The AfC is pathing the way for education and learning development to be standardised locally within the NHS institutions. The Knowledge and Skill Framework will soon be a topic of much decision.
